The Ministry of Public Works of Panama emerges from the need to create an institution that provides follow up to the construction and maintenance of the works of the State. In 1904 the institution is conceived, but it is on June 15th 1945 when, through Law Decree No. 1 is the status as Ministry of Public Works of Panama recognized.
The Constitution of 1946 and 1972 ratifies it and the Ministry of Public Works of Panama is later reorganized through law 35 of June 30th 1978. Currently acting as the chief of the Ministry of Public Works of Panama portfolio, are Benjamin Colamarco and Luis Manuel Hernandez.
One of the main objectives of the Ministry of Public Works of Panama is to develop and apply the politics of the construction and maintenance of public works. The Ministry of Public Works of Panama also executes and implements works and programs of improving the roads in urban areas.
The penetration and paths of access in the rural areas are of the responsibility of the Ministry of Public Works of Panama, the contracting of companies or consortiums for carrying out projects or vial megaprojects will be supervised by the Ministry of Public Works of Panama, as well as its follow up and compliance. Another of the functions of the Ministry of Public Works of Panama is the development and supervision of cartographic programs of the country.
