THE EMBERA WOUNNAN - AN INDIGENOUS PEOPLE ADJUSTING TO MODERN TIMES

Panama is a relatively small country but one that has nothing to envy from larger nations since in Panama you'll find a warm climate and the people around you  have a certain warmth too. That's the warmth of personality. An example of this is found distinctly within the tribe of the  Embera-Wounnan who live near Panama City.

We're talking specifically about the province of Colon close to the Panama Canal on Gatun Lake. In it here that foreigners and natives alike can come experience one of the more intriguing indigenous cultures that this land of Panama has to offer.

Currently, we can still have direct contact with these indigenous communities that originate from the Choco region in Colombia, but that in actuality are the pride of a mixture of cultural roots between Panama and this South American nation, without any problem.

While in Panama, you will, through a short tour of the Panamerican Highway, embark on an exciting adventure by a traditional canoe, or by motor boat in the deep waters of the Gatun Lake Upstream, to get to know and observe the housing, customs, traditions and vernacular dances of these indigenous of Panama.

The Embera-Wounnan are well known for their woodcarving. They have the gorgeous Cocobolo tree in their community and it serves them well as they carve this dark hardwood into attractive figurines of boas, frogs, turtles birds and more.

In the same way, they are recognized for the carving of a robust nut from the Tagua tree, raw material for the indigenous of Panama , originating from the tropical and humid soils of Panama, Colombia, Ecuador and Brazil; considering them one of the finest, creative and valuable crafts in the country.

This indigenous people in Panama have been known for their capacity to produce the best canoes on the entire Isthmus of Panama. Such is the case, that the Panama Canal Authority (ACP) uses them to transfer professional experts, towards the difficult areas of the hydrographic basin of Panama.

In these indigenous communities in Panama and others, that are at the length and width of Panama , it turns out to be a passionate opportunity to be able to enter their life styles, in the houses of hay and wood, to listen to them speak their native dialect, to interact among them, to see their colorful costumes, to try their native food and watch them dance to the music of their ancestors, giving thanks to the mother earth, for everything she gives them.
