COLON PROVINCE - AN AREA WITH A CARIBBEAN FLAIR

The province of Colon is located at the entrance of the Panama Canal and is very famous for the Black Christ of Portobelo celebrations, their spectacular beaches, traditions and vast vegetation. Foreigners and nationals constantly visit this city full of delights. Also, Colon is considered Panama’s second city since it has the main port for the traffic of imported and re-exported merchandize in the country.

Colon is characterized for its “congo” dances

CongosThe traditional dances and interpretation of African-American culture is expressed in the dances called Devils and Congos of Colon. The dances reveal very old African roots that have been passed on from generation to generation. The mixture of corporal movements, percussion, loud sounds, colorful wardrobe, masks, chants and myth are seen during the carnivals and the local fairs.

The plot of the congo dance is that the characters represent the congos and fight the devil who is said to be loose or unleashed during the carnival. At the end they are saved by the “Reina Conga”, queen of the congos, helped by the “Pajarito”, little bird, and “Juan Dios”, John God. This traditional dance exhibits harmony between the catholic religion and the Afro-Antillean ceremonies.

Foreigners visit Colon’s National Fair

Colon’s National Fair offers endless activities, exhibitions, and stands that sell craftwork and typical foods, among other articles. The Institute of Agricultural Marketing participates in this fair, by setting up the Producer Fair where you can buy products, at low prices, such as rice, oil, salt, lentils, and flour among others.

You can also find demonstrative lots with agricultural products, cattle exhibition, etched glass and craftwork from all areas of the country, a Play Land Park for the kids, auto sales, agricultural equipment, an artistic stage, discos and popular dances. If you are into flower-growing the Alianza Divina nursery exhibits and sells Cuban palms, flags, and trinkets in eye-catching colors.

Colon´s Cayo Tortuga - Turtle Cay Marina States Resort

This Project has more than 160 hectares and construction is planned to finish in 10 years. The first stage of the project works on the construction of a marine port where 74 yachts from 40 to COLON120 feet are expected to tie up. The marina will also have a yacht club which will offer the owners of these small vessels facilities such as: special hydraulic crane to take the yacht out of the water and carry out general jobs such as carpentry, paint, and mechanical repairs.

There will also be a series of low intensity condominiums, a beach hotel with 240 rooms and 20 buildings with 15 floors and 12 rooms, where the residents will have access to the bungalow hut, pool and the beach.

Colon is a province with many attractions among them are its spectacular beaches such as: Isla Grande, Nombre de Dios, Playa Langosta and Palenque. You can also visit Portobelo, a land full of history where you can find where the Spaniards left their mark during the XVI and XVII centuries and see the canons used in the Fort San Lorenzo.
