Colon is characterized for its “congo” dances
The traditional dances and interpretation of African-American culture is expressed in the dances called Devils and Congos of Colon. The dances reveal very old African roots that have been passed on from generation to generation. The mixture of corporal movements, percussion, loud sounds, colorful wardrobe, masks, chants and myth are seen during the carnivals and the local fairs.
The plot of the congo dance is that the characters represent the congos and fight the devil who is said to be loose or unleashed during the carnival. At the end they are saved by the “Reina Conga”, queen of the congos, helped by the “Pajarito”, little bird, and “Juan Dios”, John God. This traditional dance exhibits harmony between the catholic religion and the Afro-Antillean ceremonies.
