Panamá has some very intriguing places that serve as beautiful locations for a variety of special events. El Retén beach is located near the city of Chitré in the town of Monagrillo. During Panamas summer in the month of February when the winds pick up you can attend the annual "Kite and Tambourine Contest".

This contest has been held for the past 24 years and the only requirement for entering is bringing a handmade kite and/or tambourine that consists of recyclable materials or any household good that can be reused. Creativity abounds in this competition and there really is no age limit since entrants can be from 6 years old on up (even senior citizens are welcome). 

The kite portion of the contest has 5 categories: miniature kites, small kites, giant kites, "ingenious" kites and even handmade airplanes are submitted. As for the tambourines you have 3 classifications: small, medium and large. But even with all these categories the giant kites are actually the main attraction for the event because many of them are sponsored by different companies.

This annual happening at El Retén beach now attracts more than 400 participants all seeking that elusive first prize in whatever category they enter. There is no registration fee and thusly more and more people enter the event year after year. This past year the event brought participants from the city of Santiago, Las Tablas, Coclé Province and even as far away as Panama City where there's a Chinese Colony with great creative talent. 

As part of the events festivities you have lively folk dancing, great food specializing in local fare, horse rides or you can just sit back and enjoy the show and your beautiful surroundings. El Reten beach is known for its sun, breezes and crystal blue waters. Come to the "Kite & Tambourine Contest". You'll have the time of your life!
