PANAMA CITY - WHAT BRINGS EXPATS & FOREIGNERS

France Plaza

When visiting "Plaza de Francia" (France Plaza) in Casco Viejo there are many points of interest like the Supreme Court, the "National Institute of Culture" (INAC) and a small national library. There's even a large art gallery where many prominent artists have their works on display.

Looking further around the "square" there are impressive bronzes of key French figures responsible for the first attempt to build the Panama Canal. As you stroll towards the east end there's a beautiful view of the canal and you'll see arts & crafts being vended by the Kuna Indians and other indigenous people.

On the west end of the plaza you'll find the Ministry of Government and Justice Building which is opposite the "Tourist Police" where they offer complementary maps of the city. This part of the plaza also has a few buildings up for sale that once restored will make great residences for foreigners.

Speech Contest

The National Public Speaking Competition for Colleges & Education Media came to a conclusion on Sunday, October 4th and there were many in attendance both young and old. First prize was awarded to student Carlos Saldana of Chiriqui Province. Second prize was claimed by another student Rudy Rodriguez of Colon Province.

Medical Tourism

High on the list of special surgeries that bring foreigners to Panama are knee and hip replacements. A knee replacement in Panama will cost you just over $10,000. This figure includes both medical fees & physical therapy costs. Cosmetic facial operations bring many foreigners to Panama City as well. Depending on the complexity of the operation visitors usually spend 10 - 15 days in the city for whatever they need done.

Living expenses on such a trip are relatively low since Panamas standard of living is not so high. Plus, you have a John Hopkins affiliated hospital in Panama City where all these operations are performed. This is perhaps the top medical institution in all of Latin America.

Given the short time that patients usually spend in Panama for "Medical Tourism" visitors often use a tourist visa to enter the country. And if your stay gets extended the National Immigration Service will easily grant you a "Short Stay Visa for Medical Treatment."
